Get Planted - Just like a seed needs to get planted in fertile soil to begin to grow, we know it's important for Christians to get planted in a local, healthy, Bible-believing and Bible-teaching church. It's in a local church where biblical truths are taught and modeled...where relationships can develop...and where each Christ-follower can live out his or her faith and gifting from the Holy Spirit. As a local church, the Bible describes us as the "body of Christ", where together we can pursue the calling God has placed on our lives, with Christ as our head.
Grow Strong - Once a seed is planted, in order to reach its full potential, the seed transforms into something new...something that needs to grow strong - a process that happens in three intertwined phases:
Root Deep: When a seed germinates in the soil, the first thing it does is begin to develop roots, for it's from the roots that its nourishment comes. Throughout the lifetime of whatever the seed is to become, its roots continue to grow and spread out. This is also true of any Christ-follower who is serious about his or her faith. It's only through developing strong roots and tapping into the spiritual nourishment God provides from His Word and through fellow believers that a Christian can thrive.
Reach High: After the roots begin to form, the young sapling pokes through the soil, reaching high for the sun, for the light of the sun fuels the production of energy deep within. Likewise, for Christ-followers to be healthy, they must reach high to connect with the Son of God in worship and dependence, trusting that Jesus will supply everything needed and will guide and strengthen them to fulfill their unique calling. The stronger the vertical relationship with God, the more effective and more dynamic the relationships with other believers will be...and the more God-honoring fruit that will be borne in their lives!
Branch Out: As the core of the sapling develops and grows and matures, more and more branches begin to form - growing thicker and stronger with each passing season. And as these branches form, they can begin mingling with the branches of nearby trees, forming a sheltering canopy and network that can help encourage a healthy ecosystem below. Likewise with the Christ-follower. As a Christian's relationship with Christ grows stronger, so often does his or her relationships with other Christians. And as more and more Christians in the local church grow interdependent upon each other, they form a network that nurtures the overall health of the entire church.
Bear Fruit -This is the ultimate goal when a fruit tree seed is planted! But the best fruit appears automatically and in abundance on the branches of strong and healthy fruit trees - trees that have a deep root base, a sturdy trunk, and strong branches that are linked with other trees. This is what happens in the life of Christians as well. As Jesus said in John 15:8
- "My Father is glorified by this, that you bear much fruit, and so prove to be My disciples." (NASB) God wants us to bear fruit as followers of Christ - fruit that glorifies Him! As we Get Planted and Grow Strong in a local church, that's exactly what will happen in our lives.
